Pac-Man (NES) | review

Pac-Man was originally released for arcade machines in 1980. It came to the Nintendo entertainment system in 1984 by Nanco and Tengen, later re-released in 1989 by Tengen. The version we will use in this guide will be the 1984 version with the Tengen version.

The manual for the game released in the USA has as its introduction "The world-famous Pac-Man is making his home entertainment debut with thin Tengen game for Nintendo Entertainment Systems. As in the familiar arcade game; Pac-Man is intent on eating in sight, all the while avoiding being gobbled by the infamous ghosts, Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde".

What is the objective of Pac-Man?

The objective of the game is to reach the highest score, you can play trying to break your own score, or against another player trying to break his record. Points are obtained by eating the objects found in the maze. When a maze is cleared a new maze appears.

During the game we must eat the "dots" and in this way earn points, each dot is worth 10 points. There are bigger dots than the others, these are known as "Energizer", they have the property of turning the ghosts blue and being able to eat them. Once we eat them the ghosts return to their home where they regenerate and come out again. The points you earn by eating ghosts increase for each ghost eaten: 1st ghost 200 points, 2nd ghost 400 points, 3rd ghost 800 points and 4th ghost 1600 points. Each energizer grants 50 points.

The Scoring and Levels in the game

During the game we will find different prizes that vary according to the level of the game so in the first level we will find Cherry which is worth 100 points, in level 2 we find Strawberry which is worth 300 points, during levels 3 and 4 we find Orange which is worth 500 points, in levels 5 and 6 we find Apple which is worth 700 points each, on levels 7 and 8 we find Grapes which are worth 1000 points, on levels 9 and 10 we find Galaga which is worth 2000 points, on levels 11 and 12 we find a Bell which is worth 3000 points and from level 13 to level 255 we find a key which is worth 5000 points. In each level there are two prizes at the same time. When we accumulate 10000 points we will receive a life.

As we advance in level, the ghosts become faster and faster and the energizers last less and less time, so we must be quite agile if we don't want to lose a life. In the maze in the middle there is a "warp tunnel" that allows Pac-Man and the ghosts to pass from one side to the other but the enemies will go slower in this warp tunnel.

Some strategies during the game

The best strategy to pass the level is to avoid the ghosts until we are close to an Energizer, it is preferable that the four ghosts are close to be able to eat them, eat as many ghosts in chain in this way we will earn more points. Eat as many dots as possible while moving through the maze, avoid leaving dots alone so you don't have to go back because the ghosts will move faster as the maze empties.

Try not to get trapped in places where you can't escape and also avoid that the ghosts are too close to you, study the movement of each ghost. Pac-Man moves faster in empty areas than in areas where there are dots. Initially we have three lives, we will lose each life if we are caught by a ghost, if we lose all lives we will have a game over. Try to break your record or invite a friend to see who gets the highest score.
